With the experience of Rangana Herath and former skipper Angelo Mathews, Sri Lanka will go into the three match test series to give rise to some sort of upset as India has been authoritative in home soil over the past few years.
In the back of their mind, Sri Lanka will feel good and try to replicate what they did in the UAE and Durban in 2011.
Meanwhile, India will look to complete another series whitewash with a strong outfit led by the most consistent batsman in world cricket, Virat Kohli.
India squad for first two Tests
Virat Kohli (capt), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
India Board President’s XI for tour match v SL
Naman Ojha (capt, wk), Sanju Samson, Jiwanjot Singh, B Sandeep, Tanmay Agarwal, Abhishek Gupta, Rohan Prem, Akash Bhandari, Jalaj Saxena, CV Milind, Avesh Khan, Sandeep Warrier, Ravi Kiran.
Sri Lanka Test squad
Dinesh Chandimal (captain), Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya De Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera, Lahiru Gamage, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Roshen Silva.
Moreover, India and Australia are the only places Sri Lanka has not won a test. Asela Gunarathna and Kusal Perera’s absence from the squad will have an effect when it comes to depth in batting.
However, Rangana Herath will still be the key for Sri Lanka despite being ineffective against the same side at home.
“We have never won a Test match in India. It’s a big challenge for us. It’s my dream to win a Test match in India. The series win over Pakistan has given us a lot of confidence. The winning mentality is important. If we show the same mentality and intensity in India, I don’t think why we shouldn’t win a series in India,” said Herath to the Sunday Island.
“In the Indian series at home, one drawback was that we weren’t able to take wickets. We were not able to break partnerships and as a result they went onto notch up scores in excess of 600. We missed a few chances as well. We have to go with a positive mindset that we can take 20 wickets. He is our most experienced batsman. He has won us many matches over the last several years and his return is vital for us as the middle-order now is stable. His return is a massive boost for the team,” he added (Sunday Island).
Herath, full of determination, deserves a good end to his career and a win in India will surely help his cause.
The first test between Sri Lanka and India will commence on the 16th of November 2017 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Sri Lanka will play a two day tour match against the Board XI on the 11th of November 2017.
