Former cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan narrowed Sri Lanka’s chances in the upcoming Three-match Test series against India but skipper Dinesh Chandimal is not ready to give up without a fight and believes dreams can come true like they did in the United Arab Emirates a couple of months ago.
However, considering the result from this year’s home tests against India, Muralitharan’s claims seem a bit more realistic.
Chandimal will have the services of former skipper Angelo Mathews and the series win against Pakistan will help boost the side’s confidence.
“We did really well against Pakistan and the boys are in a good shape. We know India is the number one team at the moment and have seen them play some really good cricket in the last two years. This will be a challenging series for us. We have never won a Test in India. So it’s a dream for us to win one this time. We need to start well in this series,” said Chandimal (News18.com).
Sri Lanka Squad to India
Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Dimuth Karunaratne, Dhananjaya de Silva, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Rangana Herath, Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera, Lahiru Gamage, Lakshan Sandakan, Vishwa Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, Niroshan Dickwella, Roshen Silva.
The two-day warm-up game against India Board’s XI will also give Sri Lanka belief as they head to the first test at Eden Gardens Kolkata on Thursday.
“Our chances of winning a Test match in India, I would say, are slim. All teams have struggled to compete in India. In the last 13 years, only two teams have won a series in India. They are ranked number one in the world at the moment, our Test cricket seems to be doing okay, but we are struggling in shorter formats of the game. This will be a tough series and the characters of our boys will be tested,” said Muralitharan who was the best in business during his time.
