An excellent all-round performance led by Dhananjaya De Silva guided Sri Lanka through to an impressive 8 wicket win in the 1st match of the One-Day International tri-series against Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club last evening.
Opener Dhananjaya De Silva’s unbeaten 78 gave Sri Lanka the bonus point as well.
Batting first on a green track, the home team lost their openers within the first five overs of the innings. Soon, they were 6 down for 50. The Lankan bowlers were all over Zimbabwe with their accurate line and length. The ball didn’t swing a great deal but the slight movement more than enough for the visitors.
Peter Moor and Captain Cremer resisted for the seventh wicket partnership, taking the score past 100. However, debutant Asela Gunaratne dismantled the tail to restrict Zimbabwe to 154 in 41 overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka got off to a flyer as Kusal Perera smashed the loose deliveries all around the park. Eventually, Sri Lanka got to the total in just the 24th over.
Dhananjaya De Silva was announced Man of the Match for his breathtaking knock.
“Low-scoring game so I wanted to attack in the first few overs. Gloomy conditions, so the ball was moving around in the first few overs,” said De Silva at the post-match presentation.
Sri Lanka will play West Indies at the same venue tomorrow.
