We often salute our very own champion driver Dilantha Malagamuwa for his endless achievements but how many of us appreciate his disciple Ashan Silva’s efforts in the international circuit. With Malagamuwa as his mentor, Ashan Silva has lately flourished in local and international races. He certainly has transformed into a dominant force in the recent past.
Ashan Silva’s performance in the “Group – SL GT Cars Up to 3500 CC” event at the Katukurunda Circuit Meet helped him bag the best driver award, prompting a perfect start to The Sri Lanka Super series 2017. The Katukurunda win was also his most recent achievement in the local circuit. As expected, Ashan was backed by our very own legend, Dilantha Malagamuwa.
In November 2016, Ashan Silva created history by becoming the first Sri Lankan to win a race at the world famous Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi. Under the Touring Car category, Ashan won both his races in the first round of the NGK International Racing Series. Alexandros Annvias of Greece and Will Morrisson of England won second and third place.
With wins in almost every local race, Ashan was focused on extending his career to the international circuit.
Earlier this month, Ashan teamed up with Dilantha Malagamuwa and Armaan Ebrahim to win the NGK 3 hours Enduro in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo at the Dubai Autodrome. It was indeed a memorable Lamborghini debut for the youngster. With encouragement and last minute tips, Ashan Silva was well mentored by Dilantha Malagamuwa before and after the race.
“My first drive in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo car in the 3 hour endurance in Dubai was without doubt the best in my racing carrier. It has been a great weekend for me I manage to win my touring car championship round 5 and also drive the Lamborghini to the finish was by biggest task with a lot pressure on me!! I was only able to do this because of our racing Legend and Hero of Sri Lanka Dilantha Malagamuwa my heart full thanks goes out to him,” said Ashan Silva in his facebook page.
Alternatively, in Dilantha Malagamuwa’s races, Ashan was quite keen in helping out with the best of abilities. At one stage in 2016, Ashan became Dilango Racing Lamborghini’s data engineer as well.
“I’m very thankful to become the Data Engineer for Dilango Racing Lamborghini it’s the only car in the WORLD to compete from Sri Lanka and it’s not only that it’s also the winning car for the Asian Championship in class,” said the local champion.
Meanwhile, Ashan was crowned national champion at the National Championship Awards in early 2016. The grand awards ceremony was held at the Sports Ministry Auditorium, Colombo 7. At the same ceremony, Ashan won two other awards, namely the (SLGT Supercars upto 3500cc) championship award in the Gravel and Tarmac category. His achievements in 2015 could be considered the turning point of his career.
In 2015, Ashan was announced National Gravel Champion, National Tarmac Champion, SLADA Champion and CEAT SLARDAR SPEED Champion.
With Dilantha Malagamuwa on board, Ashan Silva is certainly on the right track for an exciting future. However, international exposure will undoubtedly test him as he attempts to take Sri Lanka to the top of the world.
