Contributions from Upul Tharanga, Lakshan Sandakan, and Wanindu Hasaranga steered Sri Lanka to a much-needed win in the 2nd One Day International against Zimbabwe at the Galle International Stadium last evening.
Teenager Wanindu Hasaranga became the third bowlers after Taijul Islam and Kagiso Rabada to take a hat-trick on ODI debut. Hasaranga’s victims were M N Waller, DT Tripiano, and TL Chatara.
Batting first, Zimbabwe got off to a steady start, losing just 2 wickets for 67 in 15 overs. However, the spinners did the trick for Sri Lanka, dismissing the Zimbabwean middle order with over 16 overs to spare.
Lakshan Sandakan emerged as the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with figures of 4 for 52 in 10 overs. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 155.
In response, The home team was off to an unstable start, losing Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Mendis in 2 overs. Niroshan Dickwella’s partnership with Upul Tharanga steadied the chase for Sri Lanka. Another captain’s knock from Angelo Mathews took his side to a comprehensive 7 wicket win with 20 overs to spare.
Upul Tharanga made 75 in 86 deliveries for Sri Lanka. However, Lakshan Sandakan was adjudged player of the match.
“I wouldn’t call it a clinical performance. We still dropped catches. The attitude and intensity was superb, though. We just need to regroup, and it was a great effort from the boys. Sandakan was absolutely brilliant, so was Wanindu. Credit should go to the selectors to pick him. I, honestly, haven’t seen him much. Chasing a modest total is not easy if you lose a couple of wickets early on. We can’t thank Upul enough. He has moved up and down the order to accommodate others. He has been an unlucky player. Can’t thank him enough,” said skipper Angelo Mathews at the post-match presentation.
Sri Lanka will play Zimbabwe in the third one-day international on the 6th of July at Hambantota.
