Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting was replaced by former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardena as head coach of the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians last week. Sources reveal that Jayawardena’s contract extends to a period of one year.
Jayawardena has made tons of runs taking Sri Lanka to great victories in all formats of the game. His form remained stable even in the latter part of his career.
Jayawardena featured in the Indian Premier League as a captain and a well organized top order batsman for the Kings X1 Punjab, Delhi Daredevils and the Kochi Tuskers.
“I am very excited by the appointment and glad that the Mumbai Indians management appreciated my presentation and ideas. In what is a new chapter in my career, I will be striving hard to bring them [Mumbai] more on-field success and joy,” said Jayawardena.
The reason for Ponting’s withdrawal was unrevealed.
