Maiden one-day international centuries from Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka steered Sri Lanka to their first successful chase of over 300 runs in the 3rd ODI against Zimbabwe at Hambantota earlier today. The hosts won the game with 8 wickets and 16 deliveries to spare.
Batting first, Zimbabwe got off to another exceptional start, losing just a wicket for 160 in 35 overs. Hamilton Masakadza got to an impressive ton but was dismissed at Nelson. However, Sean Williams and Musakanda lifted the side to 310 in 50 overs.
In response, Niroshan Dickwella and Danushka Gunathilaka found it a lot easier to play through the line. The flat deck kept getting better and better to bat on.
Dickwella made 102, Gunathilaka was dismissed for 116. Upul Tharanga and Kusal Mendis saw the side through to the finish line.
Danushka Gunathilaka was adjudged player of the match.
I just played my normal game. Credit goes to Dickwella, he played a brilliant knock. It was a great wicket to bat and we knew if we played our natural game, we could get it easily. Credit goes to the bowlers, it was a hard wicket to bowl. They did really well,” said Gunathilaka at the post-match presentation.
The two sides meet again on the 8th of July at the same venue. Sri Lanka lead the series 2-1.
