Hashim Amla’s missed opportunity in the final over of the 1st session gave South Africa the edge on Day 1 of the 3rd Test against Sri Lanka at Johannesburg. The Proteas were just 2 down for 79 in 25 overs.
Elgar and Cook continued to impress on top of the order for South Africa by being cautious of the moving ball. The ball did plenty off Suranga Lakmal, Angelo Mathews and Nuwan Pradeep earlier in the day.
Mathews got the better of Cook by bowling wicket to wicket and getting it to move a little off the pitch. Lahiru Kumara followed with a brilliant delivery to dismiss Elgar in the following over.
Suranga Lakmal was certainly unlucky to end the session wicket-less.
Sri Lanka will need a couple of wickets to get back into the game. They still have Rangana Herath to get the ball to dip and turn in the tank.
