Marking the school’s success in the recent past, Zahira Rugby night took place at Zahira College Colombo on Sunday. The school celebrated their achievements in the field of rugby over the past year.
Former Trinitian and national player Mr.Harris Omar was the chief guest for the event. He was also a member of national sevens squad and the skipper of the well known Kandy Sports Club.
He made a very inspiring speech with praise and advice for the team of 2018 and enlightened the audience on how sport can influence one’s life.
“Sri Lanka was one of the few countries to play rugby when the sport was introduced in 19th century. When the All blacks won the world cup, the dressing room was filled with politicians, media personnel, family and well wishers but once the celebrations were over everyone left the room. However, the senior players stayed over to clean the room before making their way out. When they were questioned why they did it, Sam Whitelock replied “We always want to make sure that the place we go to, we leave it in as good if not better shape than we arrived,” related Mr Harris.
He also elaborated on the importance of representing the school and the nation.
“Embracing a sport is not just to end up in the winning side but there’s much more to it. In my time, rugby helped me get through fear though I sustained many injuries. However, rugby is a sport that will undoubtedly give you passion to overcome hardship”.
Furthermore, he encouraged the school, the administration and thanked the parents for their everlasting support.
