Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to beat Bayern Munich (2-1) in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals at the Allianz Arena earlier today. In the process, he became the first player to score a century of goals in European Football for Real Madrid and Manchester United combined.
The Portugal start first scored in Europe for Manchester United against Debrecen in 2005. He has been unstoppable, especially for Real Madrid since then.
Arturo Vidal gave Bayern Munich the lead in the first half at the Allianz Arena. Shortly after half-time, Ronaldo converted a cross into the bottom corner to level the score. In the 77th minute, Ronaldo gave Real Madrid the edge with another impressive away goal. He prodded past Manuel Neuer from a close range to find the back of the net.
Meanwhile, The Foxes managed to somehow dent Athletico Madrid to 1-0 with plenty of bodies in the defense. They were rather unlucky to concede a goal as Athletico Madrid striker Antonie Greizmann was clearly outside the box when Leicester committed a foul that resulted in an easy penalty. Greizmann easily deceived Kasper Smichel give Athletico the lead.
However, Leicester City is in with a good chance to upset the Spaniards at the King Power stadium next week.
Moreover, Monaco edged past Borussia Dortmund to finish 3-0 after the tragic explosion earlier this week.
Coming back to Cristiano Ronaldo, he has not scored in the champions league in 659 minutes before Wednesday night. He last found the back of the net in a 2-2 group stage draw with Borussia Dortmund last year. He has 97 goals in the champions league, one in qualifying and two in the super cup. Therefore, the Portugal star rests just three goals away from a ton of goals in the UEFA Champions League.
Meanwhile, his closest rival Lionel Messi has 97 goals in European Football.
The exceptional strike in the tournament final in 2008 was undoubtedly the finest of them all in his quest for a century of goals in European Football. Ronaldo’s long-range screamer against Porto (2009) and the semi-final strike against Arsenal in the same year qualifies as memorable goals as well. Overall, he has been an unstoppable force for Real Madrid since 2009.
With Barcelona under a bit of pressure, Real Madrid has a definite chance of winning the title this year especially with Cristiano Ronaldo in the side.
In a few years time, age may dent the 32-year old’s ability on the field but at the moment he is in no mood to slow down.
Away from football, Cristiano Ronaldo is highly rated as one of the most charitable athletes of all time. He is known for donating large sums of his earnings to the poor and the sick. Sometimes, his aggression gets a little too uneasy especially with reporters in the media.
Currently, Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly not in a position to leave Real Madrid as success has been pouring since he joined the club. There were recent rumors of him reuniting with his former club Manchester United but no confirmed reports were shared over his transfer.
