With names like foxhill and gajaba echoing in the minds of every motor sports enthusiasts, the latest purpose built gravel circuit in Sri Lanka brings you the ultimate exhilaration and thrill with the Colombo Supercross 2017 that will start its ignition on the 7th of May at the Naval Racing Club (NRC) which is built with a higher purpose and of course with the highest jump bringing in all the excitement, thrill and stunts.
The track was built with the primary purpose of aiding the soldiers who were disabled in gruesome war that consumed our country with fear for more than 3 decades and also the families and loved ones who lost their son, husband, father to the horrors of war. Sri Lanka Navy is set to break the ground on the 7th of May in association with Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders (SLARDAR) and the Asian Motor Racing Club (AMRC).
Gayan Sandaruwan, one of the names that rave in the minds of every motor sports enthusiasts in Sri Lanka along with Hans Ralf Karpenski, legendary architect whose name echoes through supercross tracks like foxhill and gajaba together have supervised the design, preparation, and monitoring of the track. With 1.2 kilometers long car track and 1.8 kilometers long motorbike track, Navy Racing Club is built with more uphills and downhills with more drifting corners and jumps that can be taken for the advantage of the drivers and riders when they start their engines and jump start their skills. “The hope is to make the Navy Racing Club the no.1 gravel racing venue in Sri Lanka”. These were the words of the rider Gayan Sandaruwan who also pointed out the future hope of making the venue a sports complex and a platform for International riders and drivers in Asia. With that being said, there was a point made by Mr. Sandaruwan that depicted the future of the track; the hope and the aim to organize and conduct the South Asian Motocross Championship and the Asian Motocross Championship in the near future.
The essence of the track is simple yet affirmative. With the ultimate goal of developing the sport of Motor Racing in Sri Lanka, the track is destined to be the home for Sri Lankan Motorsport competitors to develop and improve their skills with the highest standards available with the hope of jump-starting their talent to compete in an international level. This gravel track is aimed to fill a biggest void in the Motor Racing in Sri Lanka that has essentially become one of the huge drawbacks when it comes to motor racing. Speaking to the media, Mr. Gayan Sandaruwan mentioned that they aim to make this track a training point throughout the year unlike the other tracks which are only available during a period of racing.
22 events; 11 motorbike and 11 motorcar events will be be held during the inauguration of Colombo Supercross. 124 motorbike entries and 91 car entries were received by the organizers for the competition and needless to say there’s a lot of thrill ad excitement in the air. A brand new KIA picanto and a brand new HONDA Hornet will be given to the driving and racing champions respectively. Many sponsors such as shell, CEAT, HONDA, Elephant House, Mobil, Kottu Mee, Kaluarachchi, Mahindra have come aboard to fuel up the event.
