Mohammed Fazal’s calm first-half goal was all it took for Colombo FC to beat Renown SC in the all-important finals of the Dialog Champions League at the Race Course Grounds over the weekend.
Renown missed out on an opportunity to take the lead after settling for a goalless draw over Air Force in match week 16. Colombo FC sealed a narrow 1-0 win over Army in the same week.
In the final, both teams had opportunities from either end but Mohammed Fazal was the only player who found the back of the net in the first half. The goal was scored in just the 37th minute of the game.
The intense second half could have gone either way but Colombo FC held their nerve to clinch their third title in a row.
Unbeaten before the finals in 16 games, Renown SC had all the firepower to beat Colombo FC and they were hot favorites. However, the defending champions were not ready to give up either. Renown had 12 wins under the belt with 4 draws and a win against Air Force would have taken them to their maiden Champions League title.
Since 1981, Renown SC has won a total of 6 FA Cups but their goal difference in the league was lesser than Colombo FC. Though they were favorites, Colombo FC maintained a 17 point goal difference over Renown. All they needed was a draw but Fazal was not ready to give up.
