After arriving in Bangladesh from India on the 9th of October, the Commonwealth Games 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay reached Sri Lanka and was handed over to President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday.
The Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay was launched at Buckingham Palace on Commonwealth Day, 13th of March 2017.
After the Asian tour, the batton will cross Oceania and arrive in Australia on Christman Eve to begin a 100-day tour across the nation. The Baton contains a message from Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, that calls on the Commonwealth’s athletes to come together in a peaceful and friendly competition.
Meanwhile, Sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekara and athletes Susanthika Jayasinghe, Sriyani Kulawansha, Damayanthi Darsha and Dilantha Malagamuwa participated in the event in Sri Lanka.
The handover ceremony was held at the president’s house.
