The newly elected Sri Lankan Aquatic Sports Union has been suspended as the local aquatic election were reported to be held in violation to the orders given by FINA. The Sri Lankan federation went on with the elections despite being requested to postpone it due to certain concerns.
FINA initially had concerns on the election that was scheduled for May 15th as they suspected interference from the Sports & Tourism Ministry. With the suspension of the newly elected committee, the committee that stood before was requested to retain their position until another election is held.
Adhering to the rules set by FINA, the local federation was requested to hold another election without any outside interference.
As per Ceylon Today, the SLASU committee had to say this,
Speaking for the existing office bearers Akhry Ameer, General Secretary of SLASU said, “We appreciate FINA’s expeditious handling of this matter through Mr Majid Waseem’s visit. These occurrences broke down the momentum of our aquatic activities. We will inform the membership of FINA’s decision and hope to resume our activities with the least possible delay.”
