The bright sky during the toss came under heavy cloud cover after the 10th over of the first innings and the covers were brought in when England were 92 for the loss of just 2 wickets at the end of the 15th over. From there it was nonstop rain.
Jason Roy and Jonhy Bairstow were dismissed in their 20s after getting off to an exceptional start against Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Pradeep. Roy was dismissed by Akila Dhananjaya.
Lasith Malinga was hit for a few runs; 37 in his 5 over spell but Nuwan Pradeep was quite economical conceding just 23 in 5 overs. However, Eoin Morgan and Joe Root had things under control as they too were off to a brilliant start. Up to the 15 over mark, the wicket had no demons whatsoever. It was an excellent track to bat on.
Can Sri Lanka overcome World No.1 side?
Though it looks a bit gloomy, the rain has eased off in Colombo and Kandy, so a good contest is on the cards. The 3rd, 4th, and the 5th One Day Internationals are expected to produce a result but there could be interruptions here and there. The 2nd One Day International scheduled for Saturday will most likely end like the first.
Let’s hope we are wrong.
Even without Angelo Mathews, Suranga Lakmal and Kusal Mendis, Sri Lanka has a good chance of beating the World No.1 side England. They have a solid batting line up, capable of scoring big, especially at home.
“England was really struggling back in 2015. One of the main things they have got right since then is that their fielding has been excellent. That’s a big lesson for us, because we’re in a similar place to where they were in terms of one-day cricket. If we can apply those lessons, then we will be able to defeat this No. 1 team, and it could be a big turning point for us,” said Dinesh Chandimal to ESPN earlier this week.
Sri Lanka can take one positive from the 15 overs in the 1st ODI and that is their fielding. They were absolutely brilliant and full of energy on the field. Dinesh Chandimal’s side will only hope they can do the same in the 2nd ODI on Saturday.
