Sri Lankan all-rounder Asela Gunaratne did the inevitable by muscling his way through to take the team to an unbelievable win in the 2nd Twenty20 against Australia at South Geelong last evening. The visitors won the game in the final delivery with two wickets to spare. This win took the young Sri Lankan side to their third consecutive Twenty20 series win in Australia.
Batting first, Australia got off to a good start before losing skipper Aaron Finch in the 3rd over of the innings. Ben Dunk and all-rounder Moises Henriques managed to rebuild the innings, taking the home to team to a good position to execute.
Eventually, Henriques’ valiant effort took the Aussies to a total of 173 in 20 overs. Nuwan Kulasekara bagged three wickets for Sri Lanka in the final over.
In response, the visitors got off to a horrible start, losing five quick wickets for 40. Chamara Kapugedara together with all-rounder Asela Gunaratne rebuilt the Lankan innings but Kapu lost his wicket when the score was 92.
Gunaratne continued to counter but the game appeared out of reach with 36 to get in 2 overs. Gunaratne’s smashed three sixes in a row to push the runs required down to 14 in the final over.
With two to get in one delivery, he smashed the ball over the fielders to take Sri Lanka to an unexpected win.
