Virat Kohli’s brilliant century steered India to another easy win as the side completed a five-nil one-day international series whitewash at the R Premadasa Stadium last evening. India won the game by 6 wickets and 21 deliveries to spare.
Batting first, Sri Lanka lost early wickets but Upul Tharanga’s aggression gave them a good start. Middle order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne and Angelo Mathews made half centuries to take the side to a comfortable position by the 30th over.
However, their rate of scoring was a concern and the two batsmen were dismissed trying to up the run rate to post a score of over 270. Eventually, the side was dismissed for 238.
In response, team India lost their openers early but captain Kohli, Pandey, and Jadhav steered the side to an easy 6 wicket win.
Virat Kohli made 110 in 116 deliveries. However, Bhuvaneswar Kumar was adjudged player of the match for his performance with the ball. Jasprit Bumrah won the player of the series award.
“It is a very difficult time for us. We were not up to the standard. It was a good toss to win. We lost a few early wickets. Thirimanne and Mathews had a good partnership. One stage we were looking for 260-270. Unfortunately, we collapsed again. We have to improve all three departments, especially our batting. We couldn’t get those big scores in all five games. We lost a few main players, but still, as a captain, I feel we didn’t play to our standard,” said Upul Tharanga at the post match presentation.
