Ironkids 2018 Colombo: Entries now open

Ironman 70.3 Colombo is happening this February. One of its most exciting segments is the Ironkids event. For those of you wondering, this is basically the kids’ version of the Ironman race. Entries have now opened up for interested applicants.

Ironman 70.3 Colombo

Ironman 70.3, also known as half Ironman, is a triathlon event organized by the World Triathlon Corporation. The 70.3 refers to the total distance of the event, 70.3 miles (113 km). Ironman 70.3 was initiated back in 2006. This year marks the event’s 12th successive run.

In 2018, Sri Lanka will witness its very first Ironman 70.3 Colombo event. The race will kick off on the 25th of February. This would include a 1.9 km swim, followed by a 90 km bike ride through the Colombo Port. The final segment of the race includes a 21.1 km run, around Colombo.

This event is one of many under the Ironman 70.3 title. The Colombo edition will act as a qualifying event for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship, which is to be held later this year, in South Africa.

So why have a kids’ edition alongside the main event? One of the main reasons is to encourage kids to adopt an active lifestyle at an early age. We’ve already some amazing athletes who’ve shown that age is just a number.

Ironkids 2018 Colombo will cover the entire Galle face walk area up until Chaitya Road. This is segmented into 4 categories. Kids under the 3 – 5 age group will run 500m accompanied by 1 parent (compulsory). Kids under the 6 – 8 age group will run for 1 km. The 1.5 km stretch is allocated for the 9 – 11 group while the 11 – 14 group will run 2 km.Ironkids | Ironman 70.3

This will kick off on the 24th of February, a day before the main event. So if you have a kid or know someone that falls under the 3 – 14 age group, this might peak your interest. In that case, you can register online here for $10, on or before the 20th of February.
