Dinesh Chandimal who faces a two-match ban is expected to be replaced by Suranga Lakmal who led the side successfully in the 3rd Test against the West Indies at Barbados last month.
Lakmal will lead the side in the two-match Test series against South Africa starting 12th of July at the Galle International Stadium. He will be assisted by Rangana Herath, Angelo Mathews, and Dimuth Karunaratne who will return to international cricket after a recovering from an injury.
Karunaratne made 60 and 161 not out in the 1st and 2nd innings against Bangladesh A last week. Lahiru Thirimanne might also find his name in the 15 man squad after scoring over 200 runs in the unofficial Test.
Chandimal who received a one-match ban for ball tampering appealed against it and but his plea was turned down by the Judicial Commissioner Michael Beloff. As a result, he was further hit with a two-match ban and he will miss the two important tests against the Proteas.
Head coach Chandika Hathurusingha and Manager Asanka Gurusingha will also face further sanctions after the plea.
“My aim was not to tamper, and that’s why I appealed against the ICC. I know – and my team-mates know – that I didn’t do anything wrong. I can’t control the fact that the ICC has imposed a punishment. So I have to accept that, and play when I next get the chance,” said Dinesh Chandimal.
Also, Sri Lanka didn’t take the field for at least 2 hours after the accusation and this would have prompted a negative perception, especially after the team management decided to appeal.
Minister of Sports, Faizser Mustapha later felt it was the wrong decision to not take the field.
“I met the team and have told them that I am disturbed by the decision of them not going into the field. But because of the camaraderie in this team, and the love that everyone had for Chandimal, they acted emotionally. We also have to think of what kind of mental state they would have had on the field, if they had gone on at the time. They are also people, and a team is like a family,” said Mustapha.
