Back in 1934, the Ceylon Motor Sports Club saw its inception with their very first edition of the Mahagastotte Hill Climb. Many years have gone by since then. but the race is still ever so popular among the motor sports community. It has become a regular feature in the motorsports calendar in Sri Lanka. 84 years later, the story is still the same.
Mahagastotte Hill Climb 2018
This year, Mobitel joined hands with the Ceylon Motor Sports Club to sponsor the eagerly anticipated Mahagastotte Hill Climb Race. With Mahagastotte, Mobitel is looking to forge strong ties in the realm of motor sports. Thus far, the National Mobile Service Provider has been maintaining a high profile, partnering at various sporting events.
At this year’s event, the much anticipated SLGT 3500CC trial was won by none other than Ashan Silva. Dinesh Jayawardena was placed second ahead. Meanwhile, Yasith Gamage managed to come in at third place.
For those of you who don’t know, the Mahagastotte Hill Climb first started as a spare time activity 84 years ago. Later on, it became an official racing event with only 10 cars and 2 bikes. Eventually, year after year, new cars and bikes were introduced. Participants from all over Sri Lanka made it a must to give out their best in the scenic hills of Mahagastotte.
Mrs. Gordon Graham was the first lady competitor to take part in the event. She outsmarted a number of male competitors to come out on top in 1935. Bri Ponnambalam and Ajit Chanmugam in 1981 crushed records held for both cars and motorcycles. In 1984, the event celebrated 50 years electing Mr. T. S. Jinasena as the president for the anniversary.
