Sri Lanka made a fair number of changes but dropped specialist bowler Lasith Malinga for the two match Twenty20 series against Bangladesh, starting on the 15th of this month at Mirpur.
Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal returned to the squad and will lead the side in the absence of all-rounder Angelo Mathews who picked up another hamstring injury during the recently concluded tri-series.
Mathews was set to return for the 2nd Test but as usual the selectors were not very keen to risk playing the skipper. He will hopefully return to lead the side in the Nidahas Trophy in March.
For the upcoming T20s against Bangladesh, the selectors picked Jeevan Mendis, Asitha Fernando, Shehan Madushanka, Jeffrey Vandersay and Amila Aponso. Isuru Udana will lead the attack alongside Asitha Fernando and Shehan Madushanka.
Sri Lanka T20 Squad to Bangladesh
Dinesh Chandimal (captain), Upul Tharanga, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Perera, Thisara Perera, Asela Gunaratne, Niroshan Dickwella, Dasun Shanaka, Isuru Udana, Shehan Madushanka, Jeffrey Vandersay, Akila Dananjaya, Amila Aponso, Jeevan Mendis, Asitha Fernando.
Lasith Malinga after being dropped, re-joined the Mumbai Indians as a mentor to work with Shane Bond.
“Mumbai Indians have a proven record of scouting and bringing forth the young talents at the national stage. It will be a boon for these youngsters as well the established ones to have the combine force of Shane Bond and Lasith Malinga to back them,” said Mumbai Indians’ Akash Ambani. (Hindustan Times).
Out of all the picks, Jeevan Mendis’ inclusion was unexpected as the 35 year old hardly played international cricket in the recent past.
How Sri Lanka should line up for the 1st Twenty20
In Mathews’ absence, Sri Lanka will lack a bit of all-round stability and Thisara Perera will be the man they’d look to rely on, especially considering his form in the recently concluded tri nation series.
