An impressive comeback performance from Lasith Malinga saw Sri Lanka through to a comprehensive win by a margin of just 14 runs after being put on the back foot in the 2nd game of the Asia Cup in Dhaka yesterday. Surprisingly the match swung both ways, credit to an exceptional bowling performance by the inexperienced United Arab Emirates.
On a wicket that had plenty of swing and bounce, the Sri Lanka openers got off to a flyer before the edgy Tillekeratne Dilshan was dismissed by an impressive Amjad Javed delivery. Some excellent spin bowling from the other end, tightened things up for the Sri Lankan batsman as the innings progressed.
As a result of the pressure created, the Sri Lankans lost their experienced middle order before reaching the 100 run mark. Credit to Chandimal’s cautious half century, the Sri Lankans eventually posted a healthy total of 129 on a wicket that favored the bowling department.
Amjad Javed emerged as the pick of the bowlers for the UAE with figures of 3 for 25 in his 4 over spell.
In reply, captain Lasith Malinga bowled with absolute determination from the word go. A first ball wicket, turned things around and shattered hopes for the team from the middle east. 4 for 16 in the 3rd over of the innings, completely turned the match in favor of Sri Lanka.
Eventually, the team from the Emirates only managed to get to 115 for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs. Hence, the Sri Lankans open their account with a crucial win but it certainly doesn’t give them the luxury to praise their edgy performance against an inexperienced opponent.
Lasith Malinga was announced Man of the Match for picking up 4 important wicket at the expense of just 26 runs.
Commenting on his fitness level at the post match presentation, the Sri Lankan skipper said, “I am not alright. I have still not fully recovered. I wanted to play this match and help the other players and show them you can do whatever the team needs. I have good experience playing international cricket and IPL.”
Sri Lanka will play the host nation Bangladesh on Sunday the 28th of February 2016.
