Hiruni Wijayaratne finished 11th but became the first female to cross the finish line in 2 hours 43 minutes and 31 seconds at the Eugene Marathon earlier this week. Hiruni’s stellar performance lifted her through to the IAAF World Championships.
Therefore, she currently is the only athlete with world championship qualification standards from Sri Lanka this year.
Steve DeKoker from Seattle won the race as Raul Arcos and Shaun Frandsen finished second and third.
Back in Sri Lanka, Hiruni is only second to former Olympian Niluka Rajaseakara. Due to the lack of opportunity at home, Hiruni moved to the United States of America when she was a child.
“I couldn’t be happier today. I saw (the clock) and was like, ‘Keep going, keep going, don’t stop. I’m really excited,” said Hiruni Wijayaratne after the race.
