Two seniormost players, Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal were declared fit and will play in the 1st Test against the West Indies starting 6th of June 2018 at Port of Spain.
With Dinesh Chandimal and Rangana Herath in the side, Sri Lanka should have enough experience in all departments to give the home team a good fight.
Limited over skipper Angelo Mathews was left out of the Bangladesh tour and the Nidahas Trophy after he aggravated a recurring hamstring problem in January 2018. He wanted to get back into the side a couple of times but rightly, Sri Lanka Cricket stood against the decision to avoid further damage.
Mathews played in the recent Super Provincial Tournament but was not allowed to bowl. He will not be bowling in the series against West Indies. However, he courageously announced his desire to bowl at the 2019 Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.
In Lakmal’s case, he suffered from a side strain during the Super Provincial Tests. Lakmal has been a regular member of the national side and the selectors are now keen on reducing his workload.
“Mathews will not be bowling, while Lakmal’s inclusion [in the third Test] will depend on how much he bowls in the first two games. That, however, depends on the selection committee on tour, and how much of a workload he undertakes,” said Graeme Labrooy. (ESPN Cricinfo)
Moreover, Angelo Mathews and Rangana Herath will not be part of the third test in the Carribean. Suranga Lakmal’s inclusion remains unlikely as well.
Who should be in the First XI?
We feel Chandika Hathurusingha will fancy 6 batsman and 5 bowlers, with Dilruwan Perera playing as a bowling all-rounder for the first Test. Here is our predicted line up for Test 1,
- Kusal Perera
- Dhananjaya De Silva
- Kusal Mendis
- Dinesh Chandimal
- Angelo Mathews
- Roshen Silva
- Dilruwan Perera
- Rangana Herath
- Suranga Lakmal
- Lahiru Gamage
- Lahiru Kumara/Akila Dhananjaya
We are unsure if SLC will prefer Lahiru Kumara over Akila Dhananjaya as the decision will depend on the conditions of the pitch. However, if Dhananjaya De Silva plays, SLC would rather choose a fast bowling option, most likely Lahiru Kumara who usually hits the deck hard with the new ball.
