Medhira Samarasinghe got the better of Anika Seneviratne in two straight sets 6/2, 6/2 to win the National Women’s singles title in the 102nd Tennis Nationals played at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) courts yesterday. The title was Medhira first and presumably the much needed climax in her career.
Before the final, Anika had a slight advantage over Medhira but the 18 year old was in prime form throughout the tournament.
Both finalists were forced to battle it out in the knockout stages of the tournament. Samarasinghe beat Thisuri 5/7, 6/4, 6/3 while Anika defeated Savini 5/7, 6/2, 6/3.
Meanwhile, Sanka Athukorale and Yasitha De Silva won the Men’s doubles beating Inthujan Selvaratnaraja and Udayachandran Srinath 6/3, 6/3. Anika Seneviratne and Jithmie Jayawickrema outperformed Medhira Samarasekara and Amritha Muttiah in the women’s doubles.
