Thilanga Sumathipala, Jayantha Dharmadasa, Nishantha Ranatunga and Mohan De Silva will contest for Presidency at the SLC elections on the 31st of May 2018. These are the same set of individuals who administered Sri Lanka Cricket since 1990.
All eyes are on Thilanga Sumathipala who is tipped to retain his place as President of the cricket board.
Former World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga will not take part in this year’s elections. Instead, his brother Nishantha Ranatunga will try his luck.

The SLC election was initially set for the 19th of May but provocative incidents concerning former Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara, Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake, and the current President of Sri Lanka Cricket Thilanga Sumathipala forced it to be postponed under newly appointed Sports Minister Faizer Mustapha’s orders last month.
Mustapha took over as acting Sports Minister after Dayasiri Jayasekara decided to step down following a no-confidence motion brought against Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe.
Last week, Mustapha met Kumar Sangakkara to discuss the state of cricket in Sri Lanka and how it came be improved. Sangakkara reportedly turned down Mustapha’s invitation to join Sri Lanka Cricket. Instead, he agreed to work and assist senior cricketers develop the game.
