After an excellent opening stand, poor shot selection from the middle order led Sri Lanka to a 206 run defeat in the 1st Test against South Africa at Port Elizabeth earlier today. South Africa leads the three-match series one-nil.
Batting first, the home team posted only 286, credit to an impressive spell of bowling from Suranga Lakmal. In reply, Sri Lanka struggled against a good South African attack, losing all 10 wickets for 205.
In the second innings, South Africa extended their lead to 487 as Steven Cook scored an excellent century under pressure. Sri Lanka started pretty well but lost their way in the latter part of Day 4. Rabada and Maharaj bagged three wickets each in the second innings.
Steven Cook was announced Man of the Match for his contribution with the bat.
“I thought the bowlers did pretty well but it was hard work for the batters. If we can bat well from the beginning then we don’t have to fight back. We’ve only got a couple of days to regroup. We’ll try our best to start well in the second Test. We know we are up against a good-quality side. There were lots of positives but not enough for win,” said captain Angelo Mathews at the post match presentation.
