The annual charity run RFTL, also known as Run For Their Lives will hit the streets of Colombo for the 8th consecutive time in aid of the National Cancer Institute of Maharagama on Sunday the 10th of December 2017.
For the past eight years, RFTL was organised by the Rotaract Club of Colombo Uptown with the help of generous sponsors who were willing to contribute to all those fighting the battle of cancer. The club did not just raise millions of rupees but created cancer awareness for the general public.
The raised funds were used to purchase medicine and equipment for the National Cancer Hospital.
From 300 to over 4000 participants
In year 2010, people hardly knew about the initiative and the club only managed to gather a crowd of 300. However, they were relieved as it was not so bad for a start.
Like many other successfull projects, RFTL was initiated by a group of youngsters who believed and had the desire to contribute to the society in some way. Despite identifying the right cause, they were forced to overcome a few obstacles to place the stepping stones of the project.
Today, the number of participants have increased to over 4000 and the club expects to have 4500 for the charity run on Sunday.
With the expansion, the funding has also been on the rise and last year’s donation has by far been the highest since 2010.
Eligibility and Registration process
The significance of RFTL is that it’s open for participants of all age groups irrespective of gender. However, registrations are limited, atleast for now.
When you register, you are eligible for the official RFTL T-shirt but on first come first serve basis.
Well, for Sunday, you are a little too late as registrations closed earlier this week.
Time and Venue
Run For Their lives 2017 will commence at 7am on Sunday from the Race Course Grounds in Colombo. The charity run will be followed by a carnival like atmosphere with stalls and music later during the day.
