Led by the iconic Naveen Heenakankanamge, S Thomas’ College retained the school 7’s title at the race course grounds over the weekend. After a below par performance in the recently concluded league, the lads from Mt. Lavinia were determined to win the title from the initial stages of the tournament.
With fine players in the two sides, the final between S. Thomas’ and Isipathana was poised to be a thrilling encounter. Both teams were forced to work hard in the semi-finals of the tournament.
Isipathana College recorded two narrow wins over St. Anthony’s and Kingswood in the quarter and semi-finals respectively. The Green Machine won 24-19 against the Antonians and got the better of Kingswood 19-14.
Meanwhile, S.Thomas’ College defeated tournament favorites Trinity and St. Peter’s College in the knockouts.
In the all-important finals, Dion Dias made the first draw by scoring a superb try, giving his team an early lead before Jayawardena’s second. Isipathana bounced back with a try in the latter part of the first half to make it 14-7 at half time.
An excellent try from Naveen Heenakankanamge extended the Thomian score to 19. Isipathana bounced back with a consolation try but that was it for them.
Heenakankanamge was adjudged player of the tournament.
