Former Sri Lanka captain and world cup winner Lasith Malinga has been out of international cricket for quite some time. Frustrated and clueless of being left out, Malinga has hinted at retirement ahead of the all-important ICC Cricket World Cup in 2019.
Malinga last played ODI cricket for Sri Lanka in September 2017 and was withdrawn from the Mumbai Indians squad for IPL 2018. Surprisingly, he remained unsold in the recently concluded auction at Bangalore.
In his last outing for Sri Lanka, Lasith Malinga went for a few runs but he was rather unlucky, having done brilliantly in last year’s ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales.
Moreover, a total of 12 catches were dropped off his ODI bowling in 2017.
The 34 year old was not in the 23 member squad for the tri series but he enthusiastically turned up to practice as a net bowler.
“He showed up today because there were no matches for NCC. he showed a lot of enthusiasm and I am happy with that. That is a good sign and sends a good message to other players as well” said coach Chandika Hathurusingha.
“If my services are not required any longer as a player, it’s time to move on. I know there’s still cricket left in me and if I cannot contribute as a player, I am ready to venture into mentoring leading up to the World Cup. If someone calls me today and says ‘Look, we would like to have you within our coaching team for the World Cup’, I am ready to accept it. Not because of anything but I want to share my knowledge with others when I can,” he said speaking to the Sunday Times last month.
At the end of the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka will take on the same opponent in two twenty20 encounters. The selectors should include Malinga not just to add experience but for his dedication and eagerness to play. From what we know, Malinga is a match winner and his abilities are still unmatched in international cricket.
