Sri Lanka Cricket announced a 16 man squad for the two-match Test series against South Africa starting 12th of July 2018 at the Galle International Stadium.
Dinesh Chandimal is set to lead the side though he is unlikely to play due to a presumable suspension. In that case, vice Captain Suranga Lakmal will replace Chandi as captain.
Chandimal is likely to face a two-match ban after appealing over a ball tampering incident during the 2nd Test against the West Indies last month. The situation was aggravated by the team management’s decision to stay off the field for at least a couple of hours.
The hearing is due to be held on July 10 – two days before the start of the first Test.
Sri Lanka Test Squad to face South Africa
Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera (subject to fitness), Danushka Gunathilaka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Rangana Herath (subject to fitness), Suranga Lakmal (vice capt), Dilruwan Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Lahiru Kumara, Lakshan Sandakan, Kasun Rajitha.
Dimuth Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews’ return will help the home team in terms of confidence, especially with the amount of experience they can bring into the young SL outfit.
Rangana Herath will also play a huge part, particularly in his favorite venue, Galle International Stadium.
South Africa Test Squad to face Sri Lanka
Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Theunis de Bruyn, Dean Elgar, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Lungisani Ngidi, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Shaun von Berg.
Sri Lanka will feel a bit relieved noticing a team sheet without AB De Villers but Dale Steyn’s return will unquestionably make them a little nervous. Imran Tahir has also been left out of the Proteas squad for the two Tests.
The two-match Test series will be followed by a two-match One Day International series.
