Despite winning the odd One Day International, the visitors were at sea throughout the year, solution-less in all formats of the game. Sri Lanka lost to Zimbabwe and was whitewashed by Pakistan, India and South Africa. For the first time in 42 years, Sri Lanka Cricket will end the year without an ODI series win.
In all honesty, injuries were a big concern but not an excuse to lose 23 out of the 25 ODIs in one calendar year.
In international cricket, it’s vital to play your Best XI but irrespective of the reason, the selectors have continuously failed to make this happen. When you take the Twenty20 squad to India, Vikum Sanjaya and Isuru Udana’s absence make no sense. Besides, Sri Lanka should have ideally gone with Seekuge Prasanna and Dilshan Munaweera who are tailor-made for the short format.
Even when you leave Malinga aside, Vishwa Fernando is the only bowler with the potential to trouble India. Players like Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep, and Sachith Pathirana’s bowling have continuously been on the expensive side. From here, only a miraculous batting performance can help Sri Lanka Cricket end the year on a high note.
Former captain Upul Tharanga was on fire in the last ODI but an unfortunate middle-order collapse played into India’s hands. Sri Lanka should take the positives out of this game and believe they can rattle even the best in the world.
Sri Lanka T20 Squad to India
Thisara Perera (Capt), Upul Tharanga, Angelo Mathews, Kusal Perera, Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella, Asela Gunaratne, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dasun Shanaka, Chaturanga de Silva, Sachith Pathirana, Akila Dananjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando.
Sri Lanka will play three T20’s in Cuttak, Indore, and Mumbai on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
How Sri Lanka should line up against India in T20 series
Sri Lanka has more of a batting outfit compared to the weak bowling unit. However, the allrounders in the side can make a difference by contributing with the ball.
- Upul Tharanga
- Niroshan Dickwella
- Danushka Gunathilaka
- Kusal Perera
- Angelo Mathews
- Asela Gunaratne
- Dasun Shanaka/Sadeera Samarawickrama
- Thisara Perera
- Akila Dhananjaya
- Vishwa Fernando
Sri Lanka Cricket should utilize Asela Gunaratne who can be rather effective with his cutters in the middle overs. Danushka Gunathilaka can also bowl if the conditions favor spin bowling.
Dasun Shanaka should be picked ahead of Sadeera Samarawickrama but if he fails to deliver Sri Lanka can strengthen the batting with Sadeera in the middle order.
Come next year, Sri Lanka Cricket should stick to their Best XI in all formats and as fans, we can only hope things get better with Chandika Hathurusingha on board as head coach.
