While we were busy calculating net run-rate, Dinesh Chandimal and co had big plans and they were executed to the dot as Sri Lanka completed a crushing 10 wicket win over Bangladesh to qualify for the all-important finals of the Bangladesh tri nation series short while ago.
The home team was bundled out for just 82 in 24 overs and the target was chased down in less than 12 overs.
Angelo Mathews, Kusal Perera and Nuwan Pradeep were missed but their replacements Danushka Gunathilaka and Dushmantha Chameera were on top of their game today. Gunathilaka’s brilliance in the field was exactly what Sri Lanka lacked earlier in the tournament. Moreover, Chameera bowled a tight line, not offering any room what so ever for the Bangladesh batsman.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Bangladesh lost their openers to Suranga Lakmal who appeared to have found his rhythm once again. Gunathilaka’s impressive reflections had the experienced Shakib Al Hasan back in the dugout as he was dismissed for just 8 in 8 deliveries.
Mushfiqur Rahim top scored for the hosts working his way to 26 in 56 balls. Dushmantha Chameera, Lakshan Sandakan and Thisara Perera bagged two wickets a piece for Sri Lanka. Bangladesh lost all 10 wickets for just 82 in 24 overs.
In response, the Sri Lankan openers dealt in sixes, taking the attack to the Bangladesh bowlers who did well in throughout the tri series. Danushka Gunathilaka and Upul Tharanga in their thirties guided Sri Lanka to the target in 12 overs.
By far, this was Sri Lanka’s best ever chase in Bangladesh.
“Before the game, we had game plans, credit goes to the players. We got the energy in the bowling – especially Suranga. Upul and Danushka finished it off well. Credit to them also,” said skipper Dinesh Chandimal at the post match presentation.
Sri Lanka will take on Bangladesh in the tri-series final at the same venue on Sunday.
