With a win and a defeat in the two Twenty20 Internationals, Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka are level on points and the home side will take on India at the R Premadasa Stadium later today.
Despite posting a score of over 200, the hosts failed to restrict Bangladesh on Friday. The Tigers won the game by 5 wickets.
After being put on to bat first, two exceptional knocks from Kusal Perera and Kusal Mendis steered Sri Lanka to 214 for 6 in 20 overs.
Mahmudullah with 2 for 15 in 2 overs emerged as the pick of the Bangladeshi bowlers.
In response, openers Liton Das and Tamim Iqbal got the Tigers off to an unbelievable start. They were soon ahead of Sri Lanka’s rate of scoring. Sri Lanka bounced back with a couple of useful wickets but Mushfiqur Rahim played a gem of an innings to take Bangladesh to a much-needed win.
“It was a really good game of cricket and credit to the batsmen. It was a really good wicket but as a bowling unit, we did not execute well. I am sure they will come back in the next game. We tried but the wicket was too good to bat. The Kusals are in good form and it really gives the batting unit confidence. So, looking forward to the next game,” said Dinesh Chandimal at the post-match presentation.
However, Chandimal was later suspended for slow over rate and he will miss the next two games. Suranga Lakmal might return and take over as captain. Sri Lanka, a batsman short, will look to accommodate Dhananjaya De Silva who’s in good nick in the longer format.
As it stands, Sri Lanka are ahead in terms of net run rate but today’s game against India will be of utmost importance. A win will surely put them in the driver’s seat for the finals.
