Brilliance from Fakhar Zaman, Mohammad Amir, and Hassan Ali led tournament underdogs Pakistan to an excellent win in the all-important finals of the ICC Champions Trophy against India at Kennington Oval, London last evening. Pakistan won the match by a huge margin of 180 runs.
After being put on to bat first, Azhar Ali and Fakhar Zaman got Pakistan off to a splendid start at an excellent rate of scoring. Fakhar went on to register his maiden ton just when his team needed him the most. He made 114 off 106 deliveries with 12 fours and 3 sixes.
A late cameo from the experienced Mohammad Hafeez steered the men in green to a massive total of 338 in 50 overs. However, the Indian quickies did well to reduce the run flow in the final power play.
In response, Mohammad Amir’s courage and temperament dismantled the strong Indian top order within the first 10 overs of the chase. Virat Kohli was dropped once but Shadab Khan safely held on to a catch in the very next delivery. Hardik Pandya gave India a bit of hope with a series of massive sixes down the order. However, indecision while taking a run led him back to the pavilion.
Pakistan, eventually, bowled India out for 158 in the 30th over of the innings.
“After the India [group] match, I said to my boys, the tournament is not finished yet. We played very well and now we have won the final. [Fakhar innings?] He’s a great impact player, in his first ICC event, he played like a champion, he can be a great player for Pakistan. All credit goes to my bowlers, Amir, Hasan Ali, Shadab, Junaid, Hafeez, they bowled really well. It’s a young team, credit goes to my boys, this tournament can be a great booster for us. We played like we had nothing to lose, now we are champions. It’s a very proud moment for me and my country, and thanks to the nation for supporting us.” said Sarfaraz Ahamed at the post-match presentation.
