The Sri Lankan side under the captaincy of Angelo Mathews left to England to take part in the all-important ICC Champions Trophy scheduled to be held from the 1st of June 2017.
The players went through intense training hoping for an upset when they come up against the big boys in world cricket. Sri Lanka will take on South Africa on the 3rd of June 2017 at The Oval.
“We have to be realistic and accept that we go into this tournament as underdogs. Sometimes that is a good place to be. We will just be going one game at a time. It is no point in looking past the next game. In world cricket today, every single match that you play is tough. There are some high quality performers in every team. The group we are up against has some fantastic cricketers. We have to be on our best,” said coach Graham Ford.
Moreover, the young side had the services of Allan Donald who was confident on the seamers. With Malinga’s return to One Day International Cricket, Sri Lanka will have a bit of experience in the line up.
“The Champions Trophy is a big ask, and recent results will tell you that. But the guys have shown talent, and they’ve worked extremely hard trying to improve their cricket. I think with us being a team that’s improving all the time, we’ve certainly got a chance of upsetting one of the other nations. It is a huge challenge, but one that we’re looking forward to,” added Ford.
