In remembrance of a great personality Sir Oliver Goonetilleke, the old boys association of both Wesley College and S. Thomas College Mount Lavinia have come up with an initiative to hold a rugby encounter between the two schools. The annual encounter is scheduled to be played on the 15th of May 2015 from 4.30 pm onwards at the Havelock Grounds.
Sir Oliver Goonetilleke, regardless of his personality, made Wesley College proud by being considered as an outstanding public servant. He was one of the main individuals responsible for Sri Lanka’s independence in 1948.
The junior matches are scheduled to be played from 1.00pm onwards on Friday (15). The nail biting clash is expected to attract a huge crowd including the old boys, parents and friends from both schools. Along with the principal and Wardens of both schools, Sir Oliver Goonetilleke’s family members are expected to be present as well.
Prior to the match, a press conference was held on the 6th of May 2015 at the Wesley College premises. Sisira De Silva (Director Of Sports – S.Thomas College), Farman Cassim (Coordinator of the Tournament) and Varuni Sumathiratna (Great Grand Daughter of Sir Oliver) made their presence felt by addressing the media gathering.
“I believe the tournament will continue and go upto 100 years” said Sisira De Silva.
“We expect a big crowd, we are planning on having a carnival like atmosphere” said Farman Cassim.
“It’s an amazing occasion to remember Sir Oliver Goonetilleke,” said Varuni Sumathiratna.
