Thisara Perera’s late burst was not enough to get the World XI past West Indies in the 1st T20 of the ICC World XI tour of England at London last evening.
West Indies led by Carlos Brathwaite dominated and won the game by 72 runs.
Batting first, Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis got West Indies off to a flying start before the big man was dismissed by Shoaib Malik. Lewis went on to make 58 in 26 with 5 fours and 5 massive sixes under his name.
Fletcher and Dinesh Ramdin made a couple of useful forties before Russel’s 21 in just 10 in the last few overs.
West Indies made 199 for 4 in the given 20 overs. Rashid Khan picked 2 for 48 for the World XI.
In response, the World XI lost 4 quick wickets for just 8 only in the 3rd over of the chase. Thisara Perera and Shoaib Malik tried to rebuild but Malik lost his wicket for just 12. None of the batsmen got going except for Thisara Perera who made a promising 61 in just 37 with 7 fours and 3 sixes under his name.
The World XI lost all 10 wickets for 127 in the 16th over. Kesrick Williams picked 3 for 42 for West Indies.
“That’s something I’ll never forget. For that to happen at the home of cricket, it’s massive. The cause was everything tonight, and to have been able to help, it’s fantastic. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported this,” said Shahid Afridi speaking about the guard of honor.
World XI skipper Shahid Afridi donated USD 20,000 to Hurricane relief through his foundation while all the other players gave away their respective match fee.
Nasser Hussain was spotted running around the field and even doing a bit of on-field commentary for the first time in international cricket. All in all, it was a wonderful outing for both sides, especially West Indies, still the best team in Twenty20 cricket.
