Chandika Hathurusingha’s appointment has brought about a few changes to training patterns and team selection but the announcement on January 9th will certainly have the biggest impact on the national team ahead of the tri series against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe.
Sri Lanka Cricket will announce its new limited over captain and it’s a choice between former skipper Angelo Mathews and Test skipper Dinesh Chandimal.
Dinesh Chandimal’s poor run in white ball cricket will leave Angelo Mathews as the ideal person to lead the side to the ICC World Cup in 2019. However, Chandimal’s maturity as Test skipper will give him the edge, especially due to Mathews’ series of unsettled hamstring problems.
“During the discussion, the Chairman of selectors informed me that they are considering appointing either Angelo Mathews or Dinesh Chandimal to fill the role.” said Thilanga Sumathipala, President of SLC.
The two names were finalised after the discussion between Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala, President, SLC, Mr. K. Mathivanan, Vice President, In-charge of International Cricket, SLC, Mr. Ashley De Silva, CEO of the SLC, Mr. Graeme Labrooy, Chairman of the National Selection Panel, Mr. Asanka Gurusinha, Sri Lanka Cricket Manager and Mr. Chandika Hathurusingha.
In a total of 98 games, Angelo Mathews has led Sri Lanka to 47 wins and 45 defeats before deciding to step down. Upul Tharanga, Dinesh Chandimal and Thisara Perera were appointed to lead after Mathews’ decision.
However, the decision will also depend on Angelo Mathews’ hamstring tear as he is set to undergo a fitness Test on January 7, 2018.
“We are selecting the team on January 5 and if these two players (Mathews and Vandersay) are picked their inclusion will be subject to them successfully getting through the fitness test on January 7. Mathews playing as an all-rounder balances the team nicely, but if he is to be played only as a batsman he will have to fight for his place with the other top batters in the side,” said Graeme Labrooy.
With Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and T M Dilshan in the side, Angelo Mathews found is easy to make an impact as captain. But with Lahiru Thirimanne and Dinesh Chandimal’s lack of form, Mathews failed to win games and lost confidence on himself when he came to bat.
His last defeat as captain was the game against Zimbabwe where Sri Lanka lost the series 3-2. If reappointed he will look to come out guns blazing against the same opponents later this month.
